Relationships are important in life. They make us feel safe and help us deal with stress. Relationships aren’t only important in your personal life, though. As a business owner, you should also build professional relationships. Relationship building from a business standpoint can help you get new customers, retain current customers and manage your reputation.
I used to hate reading business books.
Anything that wasn’t an autobiography or about sport was frankly a waste of time as far as I was concerned.
It’s probably natural that the first ‘business book’ I read was ‘Winning at the sport of business’ by Mark Cuban.
Most people probably know him for being an investor on Sharktank.
I read it as a naive first year Uni student.
A particular moment I remember is when Mark buys some products from a new PC store. Mark was so impressed with the young guy running the store that he wrote him a letter congratulating him and encouraged him to keep up the good work.
That young sales guy turned out to be Michael Dell (of Dell computers of course).
Mark knew back then that Michael would go on to do great things.
What did I learn?
I learned the importance of treating people how you want to be treated.
Especially when you are on the way up.
Most of the people I’m doing business with now I met early in my own journey.
If I had been a complete asshole to these people in the past then there would be no business today!
